6 Ways to Get Off The Couch

Tired of watching life through the windows? Many people wish their days were filled with a little more excitement, yet few ever muster up the courage to make a change. If you’re serious about broadening your horizons and experiencing more of the world, here are six ways to tempt yourself away from all those Netflix marathons.

1: Embrace the Downward Dog

Yoga is a peaceful, no-impact exercise that will ease you back into action after a lifetime of being stubbornly sedentary. Better yet, there are many different variations of yoga that will keep you engaged long after you’ve mastered the basics.

2: Join A Photography Class

Photography is one of those hobbies that anyone can enjoy, especially when you’re in a class of other like-minded enthusiasts, all of you excited about seeing the world in a brand new way. All it takes is a good camera and a love of beauty to transform yourself into the next Ansel Adams.

3: Shop At Every Store In The Mall

How many times have you walked past intriguing storefronts just because you were on a mission for something else? The next time you’re enjoying a shopping spree, stop and smell the florescently-lit roses. Go into every store, try every free simple and look at every menu in the food court.

4: Look Up

You’ve lived under the stars your entire life, but you probably can’t even name half of them. Astronomy is an underrated hobby where the sky can come alive with everything from meteor showers to solar eclipses. Google “Aurora Borealis” to see what you’re been missing by keeping your nose to the ground all this time.

5: Put On Your Dancing Shoes

Sign up for a swing class with your husband; join a fitness outreach program centered on music; take all your girlfriends to the local studio and rock a rendition of Single Ladies. Companies like Peridance.com exist for this very reason: To get you out of the house and into the rhythm.

6: Go Somewhere New

Travel is one of the easiest ways to get yourself out of your comfort zone. You don’t even have to go far; while you may dream of taking a beach vacation some day, the truth is that a simple road trip can also make you feel alive in ways you’d never imagined.

These are just a few activities that will get you out of your rut and into the driver’s seat of your life. There are many more, but discovering them is up to you. Good luck!

I'm Crystal. I'm married to Dale, and mother to Johnny. Some might say that my life is perfect because I get to do all the cliché wife things like cooking, cleaning, and decorating - but there's more! I also have many hobbies including needlework (crochet), sewing, and reading. My son's education is important, so we homeschool him together.

    • I have a big huge TV that in the last six months has been used for teaching my kids far more than it’s actually been used for any type of entertainment.

  1. Wonderful ideas!! I try to find new and interesting things to do with the boys to get them away from the TV and outside!

    • I’ve found my boys will be creative on their own if you just take them outside. Of course, we live in the country so it’s a bit easier.
