The Family Tattoo

My wife and I have been talking about me getting a new tattoo for YEARS now. My first tattoo was one with her in it name many years ago back in the 90’s. “Yes, I broke the number one rule about getting someone’s name on you.”  It was my way of showing her how much I loved her. Back then tattoos were not well liked as much around where I lived as they are now, but I didn’t care. I wanted to show her how much I loved her.

I tried to remove that one tattoo a lot throughout the years of our separation, but it never fully went away. However, it went away enough for my wife to want another tattoo with her name on it. I had no objections, but I wanted a personalized tattoo of a western dragon. Yes, I’m breaking the number one rule yet again by getting her name on me AGAIN.

The Sticky Needle Tattoo Studio held a grand opening this past Saturday. Some of the artists there were people we knew. However, they also had a guest artist that is a well-known tattoo artist in SC. I went there in hopes of getting my tattoo. I told them what I wanted, and he was able to draw it for me. I am pleased with my tattoo.

My kids even got to get temporary kids tattoos and be there while I was getting it done. This turned into a family event and one that we will remember the rest of our lives. I’ll always have my tattoo on my arm showing them and the world what they mean to me.

There is still a lot of debate over tattoos. However, I believe strongly that they are a form of art. They can be a form of showing how much someone means to you. In my case, this is an expression of my love for my family.

Do you love tattoos as much as we do?

  1. I personally do not have any tattoos or have anything against them. I just haven’t found anything that I would want on my body forever. I am pretty fickle and change my mind often. 🙂

  2. I love tattoos. I have 4 right now and plan on getting 2 more when the money is available to do so. The first I got was not something really thought out and the last is the most meaningful. I plan on getting the last two based on personal life experiences and what really matters in my life now.

    • That is the one downfall to a tattoo, but now they have cover up options but they are even harder to get to look good.

    • My wife shares your sentiment. She loves to look at them, but for as much as she claims to want one I don’t see her getting one.

  3. We’re used to tattoos. My daughter has two of them. My boys love temporary tattoos so they may end up with real ones when they’re older. These ones are cool.

    • Thanks. I bet my kids will have at least one tattoo when they get old enough to get one too. I do wonder what they’ll get on them when that time comes. I hope it’s something they can be proud of for the rest of their lives.

  4. I like the way you incorporated the Dragon you wanted to include the names you wanted. All of the Tattoos are cool.

  5. I have a tattoo with my husband’s name on it. I think it’s beautiful. I believe it tattoos represent time periods in your life. Yours is beautiful too glad you and your wife cherish it.

    • Thank you. My wife and I discussed this tattoo for many years. I knew what I wanted but finding a place to do it was a different story.

  6. Currently have 5, my husband has 5 as well. I want more but man I just hate how much they cost and every time I turn around the kids need something else that take my savings away lol.

    • I totally agree that raising kids makes it next to impossible to have any type of savings. I wish tattoos weren’t so expensive myself because I really want more too.

  7. Most people have no idea that I have as many as I do. When I am working – usually in a business suit – you can not see any. But when I am in a bathing suit – its like I am a whole different person LOL I LOVE them.

    • Thank you. My wife hasn’t got enough courage to get one either. She wants one, but I want her to hold off until she finishes losing weight (which she is doing, but it’s a slow process.)

  8. Wow, your tattoo is awesome! I broke the rule too when I was 18 or 19 & got my boyfriend’s nickname {at least I didn’t put his real name} on my foot. Luckily, we’re now married with 2 kids and have been together for 10 years, so it worked out okay. 🙂

    • Mine ended up working out in the end too, but there was a period we weren’t together. I’m so glad to hear that yours worked out well.

  9. I only have one small tattoo. I’ve been thinking about it for years about getting one with somehow incorporating the first letter of everyone’s name into a design of some type. I will not get one until I know exactly what I want or someone can help create the idea I have and do it properly. My husband has several tattoos. I’ve always told him I thought about getting his his first initial over my heart but he discourages that. “Never get your significant others name tattooed on you” he says, he said it seems when someone does, they break up afterward. I don’t know though, I think to each his own.

    • That would be the number one to never get a significant others name tattooed on you. For me, my wife is the only person that I plan on being with regardless if stay married or not, she is the one that holds my heart. Saying that, I don’t see us breaking up, we love each other to much. That is the foundation of what you want to look at in regards to names and tattoos. Get what fits you.

  10. Very cool tattoo! I wouldn’t care what others thought either 😉

I have a tattoo… all of my brothers have tattoos… they each have a tattoo of our Hawaiian family woad on one place or another too! Thanks for sharing 🙂
