Should You or Your Kids Choose the Mattress

If you’ve never bought a new mattress, you may think this is an easy decision. You just go to the store (or visit their site), find the one you like, and you wait for them to deliver it. While, at the very base, this is the overall process, mattress shopping is a lengthy and difficult process. That is if you want a surface that will be both durable and comfortable for the years to come.

When you choose a new mattress, you have to first do your research. And, while you do said research, you’ll find out that the market is a lot more diverse than you would’ve expected it to be. There is a wide range of materials and designs to choose from, but the madness doesn’t stop here. Nowadays, there are mattresses designed especially for side or back sleepers, mattresses for people who move a lot in their sleep, and mattresses for people who are sensitive to allergens.

Overall, there is a plethora of factors and features to consider and you should take your time in making the decision. This is even more important when you’re looking for a mattress for the kids’ beds. While you may be tempted to let them decide on the type they want, I recommend doing the research together. After all, kids are easily persuaded by cool-looking designs but they don’t consider the inner structure or the type of back support they need.

If you’re still not convinced that you shouldn’t let the decision solely in the hands of your kids, take a look at the features below.

#1: The Design

Design is important for both adults and children, so you shouldn’t be surprised if your kid will choose based on how colorful the cover is. Kids are attracted by colors and drawings so they will choose a mattress covered with cartoon characters over a white one anytime.

I don’t say you shouldn’t get them a colorful bed, but you have to consider something more than just the overall design.

#2: The Inner Structure

This is where your expertise comes in – you’ve watched your kids sleeping their whole life so you know if they like to sleep on their back, side, or stomach. I recently read on Try Mattress that you should consider your favorite sleeping position in order to get a mattress that will offer the correct back support. For instance, for side sleepers, a memory foam mattress is the best choice. On the other hand, if you like sleeping on your back, you should get an innerspring mattress.

#3: Allergy Sensitivity

Another thing you know best about your child is how sensitive they are to allergens. If you don’t know yet and your children show symptoms of allergen sensitivity, you should get them tested before purchasing a mattress.

Mattresses made of synthetic materials (such as memory foam or innerspring mattresses) are more prone to gathering dust, fungi, and/or mold so they are also a hazard for kids who suffer from allergies. If this is the case, you should focus your searches on the natural fibers section. While it’s true that 100% organic mattresses are more expensive, they are also more durable and regulate the body temperature in a natural way.

Overall, the decision should be common, so both the children and the parents will be happy with the new mattress. It may require some compromise, but the health of your kids comes first so I am sure you will reach some sort of an agreement.
