Our 2014-2015 Classroom

As I finish off my posts for the 5 Day Homeschool Blog Hop, I thought it would be nice to show you how we have our classroom set up for 2014-2015. So far we have homeschooled more on than off in the past three years. We LOVE it. However, it seems with each passing year we find we need to our lesson space set up differently. We have found many different ways of making education fun and enjoyable. The layout for our teaching space definitely has an impact on it.

Last year we started out in our living room and used our big TV a LOT with an HDMI cable hooked to my computer to it. We played a LOT of videos and online games for education, but that was also because Del was at work and we could use his internet primarily. Plus with three kids on my hands, it wasn’t exactly easy breaking down and teaching them the way I would have liked.

This year though, we actually have turned in our extra room into a classroom. We have our big dry erase board back up on the wall, desks for everyone. Zeva will be getting her own space between now and Monday too, but Roam wasn’t built in a day. I still have some minor little tweaks to make to make our area look a little less cluttered, but of all I’m very pleased by how Del has set us up this year. (We still have to get our book shelves up with all of our kids’ books on it.)

I hope you enjoy seeing our work area as much as I enjoy snooping in on other homeschool families working areas.

If you have suggestions or ideas or want to share your work space with us, please by all means add them in the comments.

I'm Crystal. I'm married to Dale, and mother to Johnny. Some might say that my life is perfect because I get to do all the cliché wife things like cooking, cleaning, and decorating - but there's more! I also have many hobbies including needlework (crochet), sewing, and reading. My son's education is important, so we homeschool him together.

    • Thank you. I have to agree with that. Just because they are ‘homeschooled’ doesn’t mean they shouldn’t ‘go to school’ in my book. 😉 Of course, that concept really didn’t sink in for me until Del made me starting working at a desk primarily for my blog work. I didn’t think it made a difference at first, but after being back in an office for a bit of time now I can see the difference myself.

  1. This looks great Crystal! I enjoy seeing other homeschoolers school rooms 🙂
We use the dining room table as it’s the only way we can all spread out.

    • I still have to use a dining room table for arts and craft activities. I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one scoping out for ideas on how to get the most out of the homeschooling experience. (I believe the set up of a learning area definitely makes a difference too.)

  2. What a great set up! Ours was either the kitchen table or the couch 🙂 we never actually put together a school room for our daughter – in our last home her computer was in our office space and then in our new home that we got last year, we allowed her to have her computer in her bedroom (she was 17 at the time).

    • We thought about letting the kids go into their rooms with the computer and desk, but then decided that they would NEVER get school work done if I did that because as it stands now they would rather sit and twiddle their fingers than get work done.

  3. I love that everyone has their own individual space, we do not have that much room, so we are all around the dining room table together. It would be nice if each person had their own space.

  4. I think it’s great there’s s dedicated space for their learning. It’s also great that the kids have their own space within the room. Just being in a designated space can help get you motivated to work.
