Organize Thousands of Movies with This System

If you haven’t figured it out by now, we are huge movie buffs in this house. What you may not know is I love to collect movies!! We literally has thousands, and I mean we’re talking well over 5000 movies in this house. Since I like to watch movies and series repeatedly, I had to figure out a system that would allow me to quickly and easily to locate a movie I’m is interested in watching. I had a fellow blogger suggest that I write up our system. We decided to go ahead and share it with you, and hopefully you’ll benefit from it too. After all, having limited room and so many movies makes for a complicated situation.

The Problem

It’s easy to store movies into smaller binders like you do CDs. The problem comes in though when you want to keep each of your movies and series organized based off its’ name in alphabet order. We started off trying to use binders like we did with our music CD collection. Unfortunately though, binders still take up a lot of room!

The Solution

Then I thought about making a catalog system using leftover wood that we have. That idea became quickly squashed when I started to think about the amount of time that it would take to make the system I wanted. Then I started to do research online. We invested in other storage systems, but this one by far has become our favorite.

Organize Thousands of Movies With These Tools

Now that you have your tools here’s how we’ve used them.  If you buy more than one [easyazon_link identifier=”B008YX7S2S” locale=”US” tag=”tidbitofexp-20″]Innovera CD/DVD Storage Drawer, Holds 150 Disks (39501)[/easyazon_link]  they do interconnect together like Lego pieces. You can buy as many as you need for your movie collection. We personally had to get 30 of these for our current collection. We initially used markers to put the letters on them, but quickly found out that wasn’t such a smart move because we ended up needing more than one or two for certain letters. We spray painted them black, and used the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00M0DS6VA” locale=”US” tag=”tidbitofexp-20″]600 Blank Labels 2-5/8″ X 1″ Fluorescent Neon Green Color Avery 5160 Size InkJet or Laser Mailing Address Labels[/easyazon_link] to make it so we could change them out as needed.

We use the [easyazon_link identifier=”B002TNRTSC” locale=”US” tag=”tidbitofexp-20″]1000 pcs White CD DVD Paper Sleeves Envelopes with Flap and Clear Window[/easyazon_link] to store our individual movies in. We do not put names of the movies on these envelopes because if the film turns into a series then we can put them in our series system. This allows us to actually put the 150 movies in each [easyazon_link identifier=”B008YX7S2S” locale=”US” tag=”tidbitofexp-20″]Innovera CD/DVD Storage Drawer[/easyazon_link].

Organize Your Movie Series

We do our movie series a bit differently. We have bought the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00063E2FU” locale=”US” tag=”tidbitofexp-20″]Snap-N-Store CD Storage Boxes, Set of 2 Boxes, Black (SNS01617)[/easyazon_link] containers. Originally we used them as they are, but then found it was better to turn them on their sides and organize our series as one big long strand with these boxes. We also used the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00LISOMAM” locale=”US” tag=”tidbitofexp-20″]GD DVD CD Double Sided Cover Storage Bag Plastic Case Sleeve Holder Package 100Pcs[/easyazon_link] to make it to where we could put more movies in these boxes. With series, it’s a lot easier to utilize these sleeves versus the white envelopes.

That is our system, in a nutshell. It cuts down on the amount of room we need for movies, and they can all fit nicely in my  Man Cave.

  2. Great idea! My stepdaughter has a huge collection, too. She likes to alphabetize, too, but it’s hard in a binder because every time you buy a new one, you have to move all the others forward. This is such an easy to maintain system! I love your new blog theme!
