Homeschooling Board Games

As a homeschool parent, I’m always looking for ways to make learning fun for my kids. It is an unwritten requirement that homeschool parents have to go beyond the typical lesson plans. If they don’t, then everyone suffers. I love using various forms of online educational games.

However, I also enjoy many hands-on old-school types of games too. So, when we were given a chance to pick a game from SimplyFun for review, I was excited. I originally picked out Clover Leap for our household because our kids need all the extra help they can get in language arts. It looked like an entertaining game for them to play.

We got the game Kilter, which focuses on teaching kids about predicting possible outcomes. It is a fun family game, and it definitely leads to a lot of laughs. I like the fact that we can change it up and play different variations of the game. Kilter has won the Mom’s Choice Award and the Mom’s Best Award. It also won the Oppenheim award too.

My mother-in-law was itching to play this game from the first time she saw it. She literally snuck and had Jimmy open it while I was away with Delbert. They were playing it when we got home. So, Delbert had to jump into the fun. They played this game for a couple of hours while I cooked dinner. Then my fourteen-year-old nephew came over and saw the box, and he got the boys to play the game, too, while I was doing blog work. They ended up playing the game for well over an hour too.

This game is great for keeping kids of all ages entertained. It’s perfect for those days when it’s rainy or just too cold to enjoy the great outdoors. One of these days, I’m going to fix myself a cup of steaming hot flavored coffee, get comfortable, and play this game with the boys too. The pieces are big enough that even Zeva enjoys the fun too. She gets great delight watching the sides tilt back and forth.

If you’re looking for games to entertain your little ones with the educational value behind them, then check out SimplyFun’s website.

  1. Wow thanks for the review. I’m going to start to homeschool my daughter and eventually my son because the educational system is so bad here in Las Vegas. I’m glad you are doing reviews that helps with educating children.

  4. We are still trying to get our 4-year-old to sit still for a game. But, I have been adding some to our holiday wish list. I think some of these may have to be included.

  7. You are absolutely right! crystal. Children are much interested in learning the lessons through fun gaming. The online games for knowledge serves as the best part in imparting the education to the children. I found many games of words, and for the children in the kindergarten identifying the images of animals, things etc. In these games the children are much interest because of their user-friendly graphical views. I agree with each and every point of yours. Thank you for sharing a great blog!
